1,000 jobs lost in TGI Friday’s restaurant closures

We are sorry to be reading reports that 1,000 jobs will still be lost as part of the rescue package deal for restaurant chain TGI Friday’s. Whilst the deal will secure 2,400 jobs and 51 restaurants, 35 restaurants are still set to close. In Yorkshire four of its restaurants will close: Leeds, Leeds Trinity, Barnsley and Halifax.

TGI Friday’s went into administration back in September, with Daniel Smith, senior managing director of Teneo, being appointed as one of the joint administrators. The rescue deal was made with Breal Capital and Calveton.

Unfortunately, it is common for administrators to make these kinds of redundancies, without prior warning or any consultation process. A failure to follow a consultation process could lead to employees being able to claim compensation from an Employment Tribunal of up to 90 days’ pay. Such a claim could be pursued if:

  • 20 or more people were made redundant at the same workplace; and
  • There was no information and consultation process, or it wasn’t carried out correctly prior to making redundancies.

If you have been made redundant and need advice, contact our employment team confidentially now for more information.

There are strict Tribunal deadlines within which to pursue these claims, so you mustn’t delay if you believe you may be affected.
