Safety Concerns at St Mary’s Warrington Hospital
On 26 October 2022 the Care Quality Commission released their report, downgrading the safety rating of St Mary’s Hospital, Warrington, to inadequate.
St Mary’s Hospital provides specialist services for people with acquired brain injuries and autistic conditions. This report was released following an unannounced inspection in June 2019, where inspectors rated the safety of the facility as inadequate – the lowest rating a provider can receive.
The hospital has been issued with a warning notice to ensure people’s safety and ordered to make “significant improvements” by 30 November 2022.
Following concerns about patient safety, inspectors found patients were put at risk by staff using “unsafe techniques” and inappropriate reporting of safeguarding incidents. The report found that the wards were understaffed, risk assessments were outdated and some methods used were outdated, putting staff and patients at risk.
Unsafe hospital environments can be seriously damaging for patients and staff alike, leading to both physical and emotional injury and avoidable deaths. Many are left with life changing injury, costly care needs and unanswered questions about what went wrong.
