26 jobs lost as Builders’ Merchant Company Ltd collapses into administration

We are sorry to now be reading reports that the builders merchant with bases in Rotherham, Hull, Goole and Scunthorpe, Builders’ Merchant Company Ltd, has collapsed into administration. This has led to the loss of 26 jobs.

Andrew Mackenzie and Laura Baxter of Begbies Traynor were appointed joint administrators of Builders’ Merchant Company on 9 October, following failure to secure a buyer.

Unfortunately, it is common for administrators to make these kinds of immediate redundancies, without prior warning or any consultation process. A failure to follow a consultation process could lead to employees being able to claim compensation from an Employment Tribunal of up to 90 days’ pay. Such a claim could be pursued if:

  • 20 or more people were made redundant at the same workplace; and
  • There was no information and consultation process, or it wasn’t carried out correctly prior to making redundancies.

If you have been made redundant and need advice, contact our employment team confidentially now for more information.

There are strict Tribunal deadlines within which to pursue these claims, so you mustn’t delay if you believe you may be affected.
