Gender Pay Gap remains
In April 2017 the introduction of new rules meant all private and voluntary sector employers in England, Wales and Scotland with 250 or more employees were required to publish figures about the differences in pay between men and women annually. So far 527 firms have submitted their figures. Ladbrokes, EasyJet and Virgin Money are among the major companies with gender pay gaps of more than 15% in favour of men for mean hourly rate. Phase Eight, fashion chain has the biggest gender gap with a 64.8% lower mean hourly rate for women.
The BBC China Editor Carrie Gracie, resigned accusing the corporation of a “secretive and illegal” pay culture and unlawful pay discrimination. The culture secretary has said “much more action” is needed by the BBC to address claims of pay inequality.
Jeremy Miles AM of Welsh Labour interestingly says “weak representation of women at senior levels is not the explanation, it’s the problem.”
