Child Arrangements over the Festive Period
For many, the festive period is about spending quality time with family. However, for separated parents and their children this can be a very challenging time of year and disputes often arise over child arrangements.
In the time leading up to Christmas, our divorce and family law team receive an increase in cases where separated parents disagree over how much time a child will spend with each parent during the Christmas holidays.
4 Tips for Child Arrangements Over the Festive Period
Below our Head of Divorce and Family Law, Noelle Heath outlines 4 tips for making child arrangements over the festive period:
- Focus on the child’s best interests – Your child’s best interests should be at the heart of the decision-marking. While you and your ex-partner may have different opinions, the priority should be on your child’s welfare.
- Communicate – Communication is key to successfully making child arrangements. If you and your ex-partner are unable to discuss matters face to face, you could try written communications such as email to ensure you have a clear record, which can be referred to if needed.
- Make plans – The festive period is an extremely busy time of year. It will be helpful for you and your ex-partner to plan in advance, so you are aware of the arrangements at an early stage. Also, this will allow sufficient time to seek legal advice and support if necessary.
- Compromise – You and your ex-partner will have ideas on how you would like Christmas to look. However, in order to reach an agreement, there may need to be an element of compromise from you and your ex-partner to ensure you are both satisfied with the arrangements.
If you are struggling to avoid conflict when making arrangements, you should seek advice from a family law solicitor who can try to assist in negotiating an agreement.
