Common Signs of Cancer in Men
During the month of November, the annual Movember event takes place to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The goal of Movember is to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis, effective treatments and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
In this article, we highlight the symptoms of prostate and testicular cancer.
Common Signs of Cancer in Men
According to Cancer Research, 193,000 men are diagnosed with cancer each year in the UK. More than half of new cancer cases in males are prostate, lung or bowel cancer (2015-2017).
Detecting and diagnosing cancer at its earliest stage increases a person’s chances of survival. A delay in cancer diagnosis could mean different or more invasive treatment is required.
Symptoms of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate, a small gland that sits underneath the bladder and surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the body (the urethra). The prostate’s main job is to help make semen, the fluid that carries sperm. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men and usually develops slowly.
Prostate cancer can develop when the cells in the prostate start to grow in an uncontrolled way. Some prostate cancer grows too slowly to cause any problems or affect how long you live. But some prostate cancer grows quickly and is more likely to spread, causing symptoms and requiring treatment.
When symptoms start to show, you may notice:
- Difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder
- A feeling that your bladder hasn’t fully emptied properly
- Needing to urinate more often than usual, especially at night
- Blood in urine or semen
- Problems getting or keeping an erection
- Back pain, hip pain or pelvis pain
While you should be aware of these symptoms, it does not always mean you have prostate cancer they could be caused by other health problems. However, it is always best to contact your GP if you are experiencing any of these symptoms so they can find out what is causing them.
Symptoms of Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer occurs in the male gland known as the testicle or testis. Although it is relatively uncommon overall, testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer to affect men between the age of 15 and 49 years. Testicular cancer is 1 of the most treatable types of cancer and the outlook is 1 of the best for cancers. With early diagnosis, testicular cancer can be cured.
Symptoms of testicular cancer may include:
- A painless swelling or lump in either testicle
- A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
- Swelling of the testicle, usually the size of a pea but can be larger
- Difference in appearance between testicles
- A dull ache or sharp pain in the testicle, scrotum or groin
While you should be aware of these symptoms, it does not always mean you have testicular cancer. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is advisable to arrange an appointment with your GP.
