Employer’s liability claim settles for £3000

A Unite member has settled their claim following an injury at work.

The claimant, who is a bus driver based in York, was injured when the power steering on the electric bus he was driving ‘kicked back’. This resulted in his thumb being injured by the steering wheel, resulting in a sprain.

The driver claimed that his employer, First Bus, had not given proper training on the new fleet of electric buses. He also claimed that a number of people had experienced similar issues with the power steering, but that no additional training or safety measures were put in place.

The claimant was referred to Morrish Solicitors by his trade union, Unite the Union.

First Bus denied liability throughout, however the claim was settled for £3,000 before going to court.

Jason London, solicitor at Morrish Solicitors who represented the claimant said:

“I’m pleased that we were able to settle this claim for the member/our client. It shows the importance of adequate training when employees are required to use new vehicles or other equipment. We hope that by bringing this case, drivers will now have the right training to avoid this kind of accident in the future.”
