International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) 2022

International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) is held on 28th April every year, bringing together Trade Unions, workers and their representatives from all over the world to commemorate those who have lost their lives to work, and to continue fight to make work safer for everyone.

Each year, the International Trades Union Congress decides on a theme for the Workers’ Memorial Day. For 2022 the theme is: Make occupational health and safety a fundamental right at work.

IWMD 2022

The event first started in North America in 1986 and is now a global event recognised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Trade Union Movement (ITUC).

Every year people are killed at work because an employer failed to prioritise their safety.

Latest statistics from The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveal there were 142 fatal accidents at work in Britain reported to RIDDOR in 2020/21, which is a 27.9% increased compared to 111 fatalities in 2019/20.

Morrish Solicitors Supporting IWMD 2022

Morrish Solicitors is supporting the International Workers’ Memorial Day 2022. We have been providing legal services for Trade Unions and their members for over 60 years so we understand how vital Unions are. They save lives by fighting for jobs, pay and conditions

To show our support of those who have been killed whilst at work, we will be joining union activists across the country by taking part in a one-minute silence held on 28th April at 12pm to remember all those who have died because of their work.

Our Managing Partner, David Sorensen commented, “As an experienced Trade Union law firm specialising predominately in Employment Law, Personal Injury and Medical Negligence, we will be supporting International Workers’ Memorial Day. Across our offices we will be participating in a minute silence to remember those who have died at work or died of work-related causes over the years. We will also take time to reflect on the many challenges people face at work and hold in our thoughts those lives who have been altered because of an injury at work.
