Care Quality Commission rates Sheffield’s Jessop Wing Maternity Services as Inadequate
A recent report published by the Care Quality Commission on 5th April 2022 into services at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has highlighted safety and quality concerns requiring immediate action. The overall rating of the Trust has deteriorated from good in 2018 to requires improvement.
The report followed an inspection undertaken in October 2021. Of particular concern were the maternity services provided by the Jessop wing which were assessed overall as inadequate.
The Jessop wing had been inspected by the CQC six months earlier in March 2021 when it was rated as inadequate. The most recent report has indicated that the Trust has failed to improve and, in some areas, has deteriorated further.
The most recent report highlighted the following:
- Staff did not consistently use control methods to protect women, themselves and others from infection.
- Equipment was not always readily available or checked as often as required.
- Staff did not always complete and update patient risk assessments.
- The service did not have enough midwifery and medical staff with the right qualifications, skills, training and experience to keep patients safe from avoidable harm.
- Staff did not always keep detailed records of care and treatment.
- There was a system to prescribe, administer and record medicines but they were not always managed appropriately.
- Patient safety incidents were not always managed well and there were concerns over the lack of transparency when things went wrong.
- Staff did not always provide pain relief in a timely manner.
- Leaders were not effective in implementing changes to improve safety.
The report also found that there was a total of 35 patient safety incidents between April and October 2021.
It is concerning to note that improvements have not been made despite recommendations outlined by the CQC in their earlier report. This raises ongoing concerns for patient safety, and it is hoped that immediate action will be taken by the Trust to address the issues.
