Cycling Accident Claims

Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users in the UK. According to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) there were 16,884 cyclists injured in reported road accidents including 4,433 who were killed or seriously injured in 2019.

If you or a loved one have been involved in a cycling accident that wasn’t your fault, you may be entitled to compensation for the physical injury, emotional strain and financial loss sustained as a result of the accident. Contact our specialist personal injury solicitors today to discuss making a cycling accident claim.

What to do after a Bicycle Accident

The majority of cycling accidents arise from colliding with a car, van or other road user, but they could also be caused by poorly maintained roads or cycle lanes, or due to a defective bike equipment.

The process of what to do after a bicycle accident is similar to that of being involved in a car accident. If you’re in a position to do so you should:

  • Identify who caused the accident – If there’s other people involved in the accident ensure you get their names, addresses and phone numbers. Also, if relevant note the car registration plate as well as the make and colour.
  • Witnesses – If there are any witnesses of the accident ensure you obtain their names, addresses or phone numbers.
  • Photographs & Videos – Take photographs of what caused the accident e.g., vehicles, pot holes etc. Also, try and reference the location of the accident by taking photos of roads signs or other fixed landmarks that will identify the area. If you have a bike or helmet camera keep the footage and if any vehicles have a dash cam, ask the owner for their details so the footage can be traced.
  • Police – If there’s an injury or damage to the bike ensure you report this to the police straight away or within 24 hours.
  • Insurance – If a vehicle is involved in the accident ask the driver for their insurance details, but do not discuss the accident until you have obtained legal advice from a specialist.
  • Damage – If your bike or equipment is damaged make sure you keep hold of these for inspection. You may be able to claim for the damaged items.
  • Seek Medical Advice – After a bicycle accident it is recommended that you seek medical advice, even if your injuries are minor.

After a bicycle accident you may be shaken up as well as hurt, but if you’re able to obtain details at the scene of the accident it could provide vital information when making a cycling accident claim.
